The next day Brian walked down the hallway at school. He adjusted his sunglasses. He was wearing them all the time now. Maurice was right. Sunlight could be brutal. He hiked up his pants and paused to tighten his belt by one notch. Was he losing weight?

Brian's locker was across from Eric's. His little brother was talking seriously to Todd, and both of them looked at Brian a lot. Brian figured they were talking about him. He didn't care. He reached up to put away his math book and take out his science book. He had to stand on his tiptoes to do it. He didn't remember doing that before. What on earth could the janitor have done to the lockers? Well, everything seemed a little odd that morning. It occurred to Brian that maybe Maurice was pulling some kind of trick on him…

Then the morning sun brightened, the air freshened, the breeze cooled. Kiersten arrived.

“Hey, Kiersten. Dream about anybody special last night?” Brian asked.

“I'd dream about Thomas Edison before I’d dream about you.” Brian smiled at her joke. Then he saw her scrunch her face. “And why are you wearing Ronnie Coleman's pants?” she asked.

For sure Maurice was pulling something. He’d get him to stop tonight.

Brian followed Kiersten into the science room and watched her put her night-blooming cactus, the mirrors, and the sunlamp on Mr. Finn's desk. She beamed proudly.

“And the paper?” the teacher asked.

Kiersten reached into her school bag. She pulled out the folder that had contained the report, but the report itself was a mangled mass of tom and chewed paper. Kiersten looked horrified. She had no idea what had happened.

Brian knew exactly what had happened: Maurice.

“I-I-I guess my dog chewed it up,” Kiersten stammered, her eyes brimming with tears.

The whole class watched as Mr. Finn wrote a zero in his grade book next to Kiersten's name.

If Maurice wouldn't draw the line at Kiersten Deveaux, where would he draw the line? At Brian Stevenson?

Brian shuddered.
